Memorial Day
Rev. Dr. F. Jay Deacon
Matthew Esterman, Worship Associate
The first Memorial Day was proclaimed on May 5, 1868 for the 30th of that month to honor those who died defending the country against "the late rebellion." There have always been those willing to die for their nation-state. Sometimes they are fighters for freedom; sometimes just fighters for their country, freedom or no. In fact, there are many whose lives have been spent in the cause of freedom and for the highest and noblest human values. And, on this day, there is a much wider circle of life that has gone before us to remember, with gratitude. Please note that the Memorial Day theme is a change from the previously-announced theme for today.

Restoration Site Safety

Safety is always a concern on any construction site, and the restoration of our church is no exception. Although every effort is made to reduce risks as much as possible, the Unity Church Restoration Committee asks that everyone take extra precautions during the construction work.

Work sites pose particular risks to youngsters because of the temptations they present to play with unusual materials and structures. Please monitor your children when they are playing outside. Despite efforts to clean the construction site at the end of each workweek, there may be sharp pieces of slate, metal, and small pieces of lead (soft and pliable gray pieces of metal) that may be scattered about. These materials are tempting to play with and pocket. Please watch what your kids pick up, check pockets, and make sure you encourage good hand washing after outdoor play. The roof work is expected to be completed within the next month or so.

The UCRC has worked hard with their consultants and the Executive Committee to maintain the safest environment possible during the project, and we welcome any suggestions and/or questions regarding safety at any time.
